What the Process Generally Looks Like
Career firefighter hiring in Ontario is competitive and multi-stage. While the City's specific process may vary, applicants typically move through:
- Written application and initial screening
- Physical abilities test (PAT)
- Written aptitude examination
- Interview panel
- Medical and psychological evaluation
- Background and reference check
- Offer of employment
There is no shortcut. Every stage matters.
Preparing Your Application
- Earn your NFPA 1001 certifications through an accredited college program. Several Ontario community colleges offer fire protection technology diplomas.
- Volunteer firefighting experience, while not always required, strengthens your application
- Your Class "D" + "Z" licence takes time to obtain, so start early
- Physical fitness is non-negotiable; train consistently well before testing
